Number of players at blackjack table

I got in a discussion today about weather the number of players at a blackjack table increases, decreases, or does not change the odds of the player winning a hand against the dealer. We could not come to a conclusion and would like to know if someone could explain to us the answer with any math to back it up. Thanks to anyone who can help.

In general it increases the players chance (that is if we assume a shoe with an infinte number of decks, so that distribution the cards drawn is not effected by those already drawn or showing on the table)

This is because the dealer cannot adopt an optimal strategy against you personally but must optimise play against the table.
