Find the amount of home heating oil in a tank that isn't level
Hello, I don't know if I am in the right forum but, my question is this. I am using a float to measure the amount of oil in a tank. It works fine. I need to find out the amount of oil if the tank isn't level on the x or y or both x and y axis. Does anyone have a formula for this? Thank you for any and all help, Ken

Ken, it seems like we need more information. Shape of the tank? Where exactly is the float taking a measurement? Can you tell us more?

Hello grillage,
sorry I took so long to get back to you.
I Would first to thank for you reply. All tank dimensions are approximation. the thank is the shape of an obround. A 275 gallon width Dia. is 27" x 44" over height, Length 60"`. The sensor in most tanks is located at the top center the thank but it could located to to right or left side of the tank. the float is a ball tether to hall a effect sensor, So if the sensor is located any were on the top of the tank it would nice to have that venerable.
I hope I answer your questions. I think I am out of depth on this. So any help in any way would appreciated.
Best regards,
Ken

Ken, I'm afraid I don't know what a hall effect sensor is. The important thing here is how the measurement is taken.

Attachment 25923Hello grillage,I hall Effect sensor is a sensor that detects metal like the tooth on a gear. the float is a ball tethered to a take up reel attached to this take up reel. when the level in the tank increases or decreases the float will move up or down turning the gear and the hall Effect sensor will count the number of teeth sending a pulse for each tooth to a microprocessor. With the number of counts I know where the liquid level is and calculate the volume of liquid in the tank. Attachment 25923Attachment 25923Attachment 25923

P.S.sorry about the same file being uploaded so many times. This is my first try to upload a file.
Re: Find the amount of home heating oil in a tank that isn't level
Ok. I'm not sure I can offer help here. The problem needs to be more clearly defined mathematically I think, and I am not really understanding what you want to achieve.
Re: Find the amount of home heating oil in a tank that isn't level
If the tank ins't level the float will not be plum and will give a false reading of tank volume. I am using a float to measure the amount of oil in a tank. It works fine. I need to find out the amount of oil if the tank isn't level on the x or y or both x and y axis.

Please find attached that shows the tank 2 degrees off the x axis.
