the graph of tangent

as far as i understand sine is like a wave going up to 90 degrees and then going down to -90 degrees and cosine is a similar idea but the tangent graph seems so unrelated in the way it is drawn can someone help me understand the tangent graph?

Hint: $\displaystyle \begin{align*} \tan{x} = \frac{\sin{x}}{\cos{x}} \end{align*}$ . What happens when $\displaystyle \begin{align*} \cos{x} \end{align*}$ gets very small? The number gets very big.
