I apologies if this is the wrong place to post this...I have a question that I've been trying to solve for some time. I will try my best to explain it.
Purpose: I play in a very unique fantasy baseball league. We calculate each team's point total for a category by the following. I am attempting to build a better way to evalute the players to find how much value they truly produce in each category.
Example (numbers are rounded, calculated figures are not):
Team 1 Batting Average: 4123/14993 = .275
Team 2 Batting Average: 4233/15529 = .273
Team 3 Batting Average: 3770/13939 = .270
Team 4 Batting Average: 4035/14727 = .274
League Average Batting Average: 16161/59188 = .273
Team 1 Points = (.275/.273)*75 = 75.54
Team 2 Points = (.273/.273)*75 = 74.87
Team 3 Points = (.270/.273)*75 = 74.29
Team 4 Points = (.274/.273)*75 = 75.26
Total Points = 300.00
Goal: Finding the values for each hit and at bat (batting average is found by taking Hits divided by At Bats, as shown in the above example) to make up the value that each hitter produces towards the entire 300 point "pie"
Other Elements: In addition to this, we are given bonus points that are based on the rankings for our team, the team with the most points receives an additional 9 points and the second place team receives between 2 and 7 points on a sliding scale.
My Research Results: Because this problem is beyond my math skills, I used a method of finding the value of an additional AB and the value of an additional hit to help find the value of them in total. At Bats by this method are worth -0.00675 points while hits are worth 0.04332 points. This does not include the bonus element within it.
Help Requested: In a perfect world, I would love to know how to correctly judge the values of each hit and at bat. I have several other categories that I would also like to use a better methodology to judge a player based on so my understanding of how to do it is very important. Ultimately I am looking for advise and direction on how to use this information to help produce the best information on a per player basis for future use.
