I don't know what you mean by wanting a rational expression... It will never be rational since $\displaystyle \displaystyle \sqrt{2}$ is irrational...
The problem is number 4 of the attached problem sheet. This is my first assignment for calculous 1.
It probably means to write it as a fraction (i.e. a rational function) in terms of $\displaystyle \displaystyle \sin{x}$ and $\displaystyle \displaystyle \cos{x}$...
Write cos(x) and tan(x) in terms of sin(x) & cos(x). Write the result as a single fraction.
