Thread: please help me with this question

We have to do essays! ahh ok here it is...
Explain how a person could use trigonometry to indirectly measure(from the ground) the height of the schools flag pole and the width of a river

Provide carefully labeled, color-coded diagrams as well as relating forumlas and explainations


please help me school is almost out and i have to turn this in because its extra credit and i have an F and it will ruin my academic honors deploma! Thanks!

For the flag pole:

You could measure youself and your shadow.
And the shadow of the flag pole.

Then you could use similar triangles to find out how tall the flag pole is. Or you could use trig using the same information.

1) Draw a parallel line along the river
2) Mark the point on the line that forms a perpendicular line with a tree on the other side of the river
3) Walk along the line for some distance "d" and note the angle "g" towards the same tree
4) Use tangent.
