Thread: Triangles

A pole 100 feet high stands vertically at the centre of a horizontal equilateral triangle, each side of which subtends an angle of 60 degrees at the top of the pole. Find the side of the triangle.

I think this problem involves dealing with multiple planes.....Please Help!

considering the vertical triangle

tan60 = 100 / base
__
gives base = 100 / 3

base form median of triangle so

hight of triangle = 100/ 3 x 3/2 = 150/ 3
__
hence sides of triangle = 150/ 3 /sin60 = 300ft
