    Well \displaystyle \tan^2 x = \sec^2x-1

    Therfore \displaystyle 2\tan^2 x + 2 \sec^2 x - \sec x = 12 becomes

    \displaystyle 2( \sec^2x-1) + 2 \sec^2 x - \sec x = 12

Now you have everything in terms of \sec x
