Red face A simple but mind twisting one

    Hi

Anybody knows how to solve this:
    tan(x)-x=a
I was solving a problem which ended on solving this one, then I was trapped.

    Thanks

That's a transcendental equation. You'll have to solve it numerically.

There is no known closed-form algebraic solution to that equation. The best you can do is, given a particular value for a, use a computer (most likely) to solve for x. You could try Newton-Raphson or something similar.
