solving a trig equation

cos squared theta + sin theta + 1 = 0

should I just use the quadratic formula first and go from there?

No, the quadratic formula is second.

First change your $\cos^2 \theta$ to $\sin^2 \theta$ using the identity $\sin^2 \theta + \cos^2 \theta = 1$
