start by using the law of cosines to find the values of the three angles of the triangle ...

$\displaystyle \displaystyle \cos{A} = \frac{b^2+c^2-a^2}{2bc}$

then use the law of cosines again to find the length of the dividing line.

$\displaystyle a = \sqrt{b^2+c^2 - 2bc \cos{A}}$
