what is the effect of 2 in the equation above?

The two doubles the amplitude of the graph. This means that your range is now $\displaystyle -2 \leq x \leq 2$
It also means that your graph goes from -2 to +2 in the same "space" (which is $\displaystyle \pi$ in this case)
Edit: More generally $\displaystyle A\sin(x)$ will have a range of $\displaystyle -A \leq x \leq A$ and will go from $\displaystyle -A$ to $\displaystyle A$ in $\displaystyle \pi$ radians.
