1. [SOLVED] lottery question.

in a pick three lottery 3 digits are randomly chosen from 0-9,
The three numbers can be the same.

what are the odds getting the 3 numbers right?
what are the odds of getting them in the correct order?

The order one I got right, 10x10x10=1000
but the other one I cannot get....the answer is 1/167 but I dont see how that is found.

thanks.

2. I guess its because if you have

012 it could be 012,021,120,102,201,210? 3!.... I guess thats the easiest way?

Frankly, I think that this question is so poorly written as to make it meaningless.

Take your example. Suppose that the winning draw is 012.
If I had bought the ticket 010 then do I win? All my numbers are in the ticket.

Suppose the wining draw is 343.
I buy the ticket 345. Do I win?

What does a winning ticket actually mean?

4. its two questions.
say the drawn number was 123
1= if you have pick the 3 numbers that have been drawn you ie (231=win)

2=you pick those three number in the same order that is drawn.
(231=lose / 123 =win)

Im pretty sure I understand it know though.

That does not answer my objections: FORGET ORDER!

6. Oh I get what you mean like if 012 was drawn and you picked 111 hmm. I see what you mean, I think it means to pick all of the numbers drawn either in order or not.

I just looked in the book again and the question is about 100 words long so I shortened it, if you look at it that way even the books question is questionable.

7. hello

the answer to the second question is 1 in 167 is worked out as follows

there are 10 * 10 * 10 = 1000

but ....

say if you picked the 3 numbers , 123

and 321 came out , would you lose because the order was wrong?

if you had to get the right order your odds of winning are 1 in 1000

but ...

if 123 , 321 , 132 , 312 , 213 , 231 are treated as the same ,,meaning
any one of them would be a winner like in the lottery , you need to eliminate them from the 1000

10 * 10 * 10 = 1000 divided by 3 * 2 * 1 , ie 6 = 167

so your chances of winning are now 1 in 167

now 123 , 321 , 132 , 312 , 213 , 231
are treated as the same

so any 1 of the in any order is a winner! yippy
i hope this helps
