    Proportional samples

    A company wants to survey 500 of its employees about job satisfaction. The company employs 860 people in British Columbia, 1100 people in Ontario, and 560 people in New Brunswick. How many employees should be sampled in each province so that the number in each provincial sample is proportional to the number of employees in that province?

    Draft work:

    500 required

    BC = 860
    ON = 1100
    NB = 560
    TOTAL: 2520

    STEP 1
    BC: 860/2520 x 100 = 34.1%
    ON: 1100/2520 x 100 = 43.7%
    NB: 560/2520 x 100 = 22.2%

    STEP 2
    BC: 34.1% / 100 = .341 x 860 = 293 (People)
    ON: 43.7% / 100 = .437 x 1100 = 480 (People)
    NB: 22.2% / 100 = .222 x 560 = 124 (People)

    STEP 3
    293 + 480 + 124 = way more than 500

    hi

    You have to take the percentages times 500.

    For ex BC was 34.1%, ->  0.341 \cdot 500 = 170.5
     0.437 \cdot 500 = 218.5
     0.222 \cdot 500 = 111
     170.5 + 218.5 + 111 = 500
