probabillity of word positions in texts
Hi everyone.
Please excuse this stupid question but here it is anyway:

What are the chances of the following occourring in a book?

On page 8,
of line 8
the 8th word
has 8 letters and
the 8th letter of that word
is 8th in the abc (H)

How would you work out the possibillities?

Would such a thing be considered a string of coincidences?

hope this makes sense.

beat regards to all.

This is (more or less) the same as a random word in a book having 8 letters and the last one being an "h".

You would estimate this by taking a sample of books, selecting random words and if they have eight letters ending with "h" count that a success.

The the estimate of the probability would he the ratio of the number of successes to the number of words tested.

Without doing the experiment I can't say, and I don't have the time to do the experiment as most of my free time at present is taken up with my own reseach programme
