Suppose that you want to test the claim that the mean weight of male harbor seals is 300 pounds. You collect a sample of 90 seals and find that the mean weight in the sample is 308 pounds. Using a level of significance α = 0.05 and a standard deviation of 23, test the null hypothesis H0: µ=300.

Now, we find our test statistics:

$z=\frac{(\overline{x}-{\mu})\sqrt{n}}{{\sigma}}$

$z=\frac{(308-300)\cdot 3\sqrt{10}}{23}\approx 3.30$

Since the alpha is .05 and we have a two-tailed test, then our critical value is 1.96.

Since the test statistic is greater than the critical value, we choose to reject the null hypothesis.

Also, we can look at the p-value, which is .0014, Since $p<{\alpha}$ we reject the null hyp.
