    linear equation..

in stats today, we took a big bag of m&ms, and took 5 samples from it.
So, i got the number in each sample, and then the #of blue ones in each sample. From that, we predicted the # total in the bag

For example...The sample I drew had 28 total, and 9 blue ones.
    So then we did, 9/28=184/x
184 is the total # of blue in the bag.

    For x, I got about 572.

So my teacher had 5 samples like this on the board. He then said to make an equation of best fit. Im confused on what the x and y variables should be.

I would recommend forgetting about where the x and y go and simply thinking about what it is you are trying to do.

    You are estimating a proportion.

9/28 - There is your estimate of the proportion.

(9/28)*184 = 59 {and change} - There is your estimate of the number of blue ones.

If nothing else, this thinking about it stuff will refuse to let you build things backwards.

    9/28 = x/184
