Thread: possibilities

I can't work out how many combinations of results 4 different teams may have. They can either win, lose or draw.
1 team = 3 (W,L,D)
2 teams = 9 (WW, WL, WD, LL, LW, LD, DD, DL, DW)
3 teams = 21 (I think)
how many for 4, and what is the maths behind it\/ Thanks

For 1 team there are 3 possibilities.

When there are 2 teams for each of the 3 possibilities for the first team there are the 3 possibilities of the next team. Draw it as a tree maybe.
It's 3 * 3 at that point.

Each time the number of possibilities triples. So in general it's 3 to the power of the number of teams.
