Can Math Guess the Next 3 Digit Combination?
Hey there, just curious, if we have a game (say, lottery) and the game lets us choose a 3 digit combination from numbers 1 to 9 (repeating), can we somehow predict the next three digit combination?? I have seen a formula for this but i doubt its effectiveness. Just wondering.

Unless the game chooses the numbers following a particular set of rules, I'm afraid not. Given a sequence of numbers, you can always make the next term any number you wish, it would still be a sequence of numbers. More astonishingly, suppose you start off with the initial k terms of a sequence. Fixing an arbitrary number n to be the k+1 term, you can write down a polynomial P such that P(1)=first term, P(2) = second term,...P(k)=kth term, P(k+1)=n.

but suppose we have the first n combinations, how can we be sure that there does not exist a certain pattern to it, for us to now the n+1 combination??? Just wondering again. thanks
