Confounding variables are hidden variables which explains the apparent correlation between the independent and dependent variables in a statistical analysis.

For instance in the early 20th century the correlation between the height and the wearing top hats in men crossing Westminster Bridge is not a causal relationship but is explained by better nutrition in the rich who also preferentially wear top hats. Here nutrition is a confounding variable.

    Thank you!!

How about violence on TV or Video games (independent variable) causes aggressive behaviour in children (dependent variable)? Violent TV may correlate with aggression in children, but style of parenting also correlates with aggression, then parenting style would be a confounding variable, because we then couldnt be sure if it was the violent TV or parenting style that causes the aggressive behavior.
