Binomial, Geometric, Negative Binomial, Hypergeometric Distribution

Is there an efficient way to identify which distribution a probability is in? I been doing the chapter exercises to no avail... I keep mixing out geometric and negative binomial... & sometimes we get a None of the above answer !!!

Can someone brief me regarding the important criterias for each distribution? I already know how to use the formulas and stuff, but I don't know how to get from not knowing which distribution apply to which does (so I can use the appropriate formula).

    Thanks!

I actually discourage students from naming, Binomial, Geometric, Negative Binomial, Hypergeometric Distribution. Rather I spend a great deal of time on their learning basic counting rules. In most discrete cases if one knows how to count the total outcomes it is easy to apply the counting principles to the elementary events.

Well in that case you must learn which is which. I guess you fall back upon notes/textbook.
