# Math Help - Mean and median.

1. ## Mean and median.

There's a group of 35 programmers. Among them, the median salary is $67,000 and the mean salary is$77,000. Calculate the mean and median in each of the following cases (individually, not consecutively).
a. The lowest paid programmer, whose salary is less than $47,000, gets a$20,000 raise. What is the new mean and new median?
b. The highest paid programmer gets a $20,000 raise. What is the new mean and median? c. All programmers get a$20,000 raise. What is the new mean and median?
d. The two highest paid programmers each get a \$40,000 raise (they threatened to leave and start their own company). What is the new mean and median?

2. ## Re: Please show me how to do these-practice problems? MATH!?

Heres some help with the mean for part a.

Mean salary = (Combined salaries of all programmers)/(Total number of programmers)

Substituting the information you have:

77,000 = (Combined salaries of all programmers)/35

What is the combined salaries of all programmers?

After you know this add 20,000 and divide by 35, you'll have the new mean.

Also, if the lowest paid programmer has a pay increase which is below the median, is the median going to change?
