Mean Absolute Deviation

I have a question about the usefulness of the mean absolute deviation. I understand how to find it for a set of numbers. I also understand that it tells us on average how far away the elements of a set tend to be from the mean. What other usefulness does this stat have? With a standard deviation on a somewhat normal distribution I can see that roughly 68% of the values in a set are within one standard deviation. Can I tell what percent of values in the set are within one mean absolute deviation? Or is there a way to use mean absolute deviation to tell if the mean is an appropriate stat? Guess I am trying to see how this stat is useful. Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!
