What side does the critical region go on in a 1tailed associated test?

I'm trying to answer if the average work time of a student is 60 minutes per day. I have my sample of 40 students to ensure relative normality--on the test of significance, a 1 tailed associative test, what side of the distribution should my critical value be on?

    Thanks.

If you want to know if the average work time is equal to 60 mins then a 2 tailed test is used.

If you are looking at if the average work time is 'less than 60' mins or 'greater than 60 mins' then we are talking one tail.
