Thread: Statistic Problem based on Pokemon Game for litte brother

So basically, I got in an argument about statistics in a pokemon game with my brother. ha Anyways, heres the details

When you encounter a pokemon, you know if it is either male or female. Only after the battle are you able to learn the nature of the pokemon, of which there are 25 natures. My brother insists on only catching the Male pokemon, while he is also looking for one with 1 of 2 of the 25 natures.

The question: Does skipping the female pokemon without knowing their nature lessen the chance of him finding one with the right nature?

With each pokemon, comes 2/25 probability to get the right nature, irrespective of their gender. Now, if he skips the female pokemon, he misses out many of his chances.

But seriously, if you want to get a pokemon with a desired nature, just breed two pokemon, or with a Ditto, the female holding an everstone. You then have a 50% chance of the nature of the pokemon to be passed down to the pokemon, AND you get to get a better control on the IVs of the pokemon.

Well, its a heatran so he cannot breed it.

Would the probability not be 2/50, or 1/50 if he skips females?

The probability of getting the good Heatran regardless of gender is 2/25.

Probability of getting a good male Heatran is 2/25 * 1/2 = 2/50 = 1/25

It's the same for a female Heatran.

In brief, your brother is halving his chances.

And you'd be surprised how much more difficult it is to get good IVs >.<. I have spent hours getting decent ones.
