Suppose you ask a difficult question, then professor assumes you know more than you actually do, and decides to discuss this question, but he or she believes in the Socratic method. Since this teacher wants to stimulate his or her students, he or she then questions you about details of your question which should be known for the question that you asked. However, there will be a strong chance you can't answer what he or she asks and you may feel embarrassed in class now. Your wanting make a good impression now has looking at you different because you asked an unnecessary question you can't even discuss.
