    division of polynomials

    so (x^4 - x^3 - 7x^2 + x + 6) / (x - 2)

I tried synthetic division and came up with

    x^3 + x^2 -5x -9 with a remainder of 12/(x-2)

    look good?

You should be able to check this yourself. Multiply both sides by (x-2) and see if you end up with x^4 - x^3 - 7x^2 + x + 6
