Application - Health and Weight of a Person

For a healthy person who is 4 feet 10 inches tall, the recommended minimum weight is about 91 pounds and increases by about 3.7 pounds for each additional inch of height. The recommended maximum weight is about 119 pounds and increases by about 4.8 pounds for each additional inch of height.

(a) Let be "x" the number of inches by which a person’s height exceeds 4 feet 10 inches and let "y" be the person’s weight in pounds. Write a system of inequalities that describes the possible values of and for a healthy person.

**Okay so x = person's height (inches) after 58 inches (4 ft. 10 inches).**

Then y = person's weight in pounds.

The system of linear equations I have so far:

$\displaystyle y \geq 91$

$\displaystyle y = 91 + 3.7x$

$\displaystyle y \leq 119$

$\displaystyle y = 119 + 4.8x$

**Would that be right?**

(b) Use a graphing utility to graph the system of inequalities from part (a).

**I'll graph this myself.**

(b) What is the recommended weight range for someone 6 feet tall?

**Would you use the graph to determine this or solve the system of equations above?**
