The the midpoint is $\displaystyle M \left( \frac{x_1+x_2}{2}, \frac{y_1+y_2}{2} \right)$

Find the midpoint of the line segment from A(2, 9) to B(4, 5).
To travel from $\displaystyle A(2,9)$ to $\displaystyle B(4,5)$,
. . we must move 2 units to the right and 4 units down.
To travel halfway to $\displaystyle B$,
. . we must move 1 unit to the right and 2 units down.
This places us at: $\displaystyle (2 + 1,\,9 - 2) \:=\:(3,7)$
