1. ## Function Notation

OK, so after my failed attempt to derive my own function for an assignment, I ended up using the graphing program that I was using to check my answers to generate the function for me, so i now have f(x)=-1.3588109E -05*x^5 +0.00091719736*x^4 -0.021418315*x^3+0.19880489*x^2-0.17829018*x+2

So now i need to work back from this and get all the working out that im supposed to have, the only problem is that I have no idea what the E (above in bold) is, what it does, and how it is found. Any help in that regard would be much appreciated.

The function is written in scientific notation (standard form). The E is a shorthand way of writing "Times 10 to the power of the number that follows".

So the start of the function would be -1.3588109*10^-5? Or is it 10^-0.5 or 0.05?

Yes, it means -0.000013588109 = -1.3588109*10^-5 = -1.3588109E -05
