# Thread: Restrictions on the variable

1. ## Restrictions on the variable

Perform the division. Express the result in quotient form. Identify any restrictions on the variable.

I know how to do the division. just not find the restrictions on the variable.

eg.
6x^2 + x - 9 divided by 2x -1

equals 3x + 1 remainder -7
Quotient statement: (6x^2 + x - 9) = (2x -1)(3x +1) - 7

How do you find the restrictions?

well, i do not know all that you look for to determine the restrictions, but i suppose they are talking about what values you can choose for the variable. so, for instance, x cannot be 1/2, since that makes 2x - 1 = 0 and we can't divide by zero. so that's a restriction
