sqrt of x

sq rt of a^2-x^2

The definition of an even function $\displaystyle f(x)$ is that $\displaystyle f(x) = f(-x)$.

The definition of an odd function $\displaystyle g(x)$ is that $\displaystyle g(x) = -g(-x)$.

So, to determine whether a function is even or odd, replace x with -x and see what happens. You should know that tangent is an odd function and secant is an even function, even though this is not immediately obvious without knowing identities or looking at graphs.
