There are many many types of curve. A very interesting family of curves are the conic sections. These include a line, circle, elipse, parabola and hyperbola. Look at Conic section - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Then there is the logatithm and the sine wave.

And almost any curve you can imagine can be drawn by choosing suitable coefficients (a,b,c,d...) for:
$y=a*x+b*x^2+c*x^3+d*x^4+...$
