    algebra word problems

    Ok, here is a problem that I have been stuck on for a while and can't make any sense of on how to even start the formula. Can someone please help me with how to get a formula from here and what I need to do? Also is there any suggestions for sites that can help me learn how to get the formulas from word problems that someone can recommend? Here is the problem:

    Supplies recently sold a wirebound graph paper notebook for $2.50 and a college ruled notebook made of recycled paper for $2.30. At the start of a recent sping semester, a combination of 50 of these notebooks was sold for a total of $118.60. How many of each type were sold.

    I hope someone can help me soon. thanks mica.

    Let x be the number of graph paper notebooks and y be the number of recycled notebooks.

    Since each graph paper notebook costs $2.50 and each recycled notebook costs $2.30 and the total amount was $118.60,
    $2.30x+$2.30y = $118.60

    Since 50 notebooks have been sold total
    x+y = 50

    Can you continue?

    Simultaneous linear equations

    Let g=# graph paper and c= #college lined paper.
    1) g+c=50
    2) 2.5g+2.3c=118.60

    g=50-c from 1)

    Substitute in 2)
    2.5(50-c)+2.3c=118.60
    125-2.5c+2.3c=118.60
    6.40=.2c
    c=32 and g=18

    Hello, mica121169!

    A graph paper notebook sold for $2.50
    and a ruled notebook sold for $2.30.
    A combination of 50 of these notebooks was sold for a total of $118.60.
    How many of each type were sold.

    Let G = number of graph paper notebooks sold.
    Let R = number of ruled notebooks sold.

    We are told that 50 notebooks were sold: .G + R .= .50 .[1]
    . . We have one equation.

    G notebooks at $2.50 each . . . sold for: 2.50G dollars.
    R notebooks at $2.30 each . . . sold for: 2.30R dollars.
    The total of the sales was $118.60: . 2.50G + 2.30 R .= .118.60
    . . There is our second equation.
    Multiply by 10: . 25G + 23R .= .1186 .[2]

    Multiply [1] by -23: =-23G - 23R .= .-1150
    . . . . . . . .Add [2]: . .25G + 23R .= . 1186

    And we have: . 2G .= .36 . . G .= .18

    Substitute into [1]: . 18 + R .= .50 . . R .= .32
