You can be expected to memorize this for an exam.

One variable squared. The other linear. Parabola. Done.

A little more information can be discerned by noting which variable is squared.

A little more information can be discerned by noting the sign of the coefficient on the squared term.

A little more information can be discerned by noting whether there is also a linear term with the same variable as the squared term.

and on and on and on...
