Let $M(x_M~,~y_M)$ and $N(x_N~,~y_N)$

$MN$ is defined as following :

$MN=\sqrt{(x_N-x_M)^2+(y_N-y_M)^2}$

Take a look at the attachment, and think "Pythagorean theorem" !
