# Math Help - Slope...ugh

1. ## Slope...ugh

Alright, so i'm finally going to take my make-up slope test tomorrow, and judging by my prac-test of the same type, i'm gonna need some help.
My teacher has this system, you see, where every answer you get right on the prac-test is one you don't have to do on the real test. So, out of 20 problems, i only have to do 14 tomorrow. yippee.
So, anyways, it is now almost 3 weeks since the prac-test. i was sick the day of the real test, so had to postpone it, and then my teacher was sick for 6 school days, so that pushed it more. to summarize: i now have a weak memory of a topic i could barely figure out before. plus, being the utter genius i am, i forgot my math book at school.
So, anyway, can someone check my workings of some problems, to see if i get them right, and if i dont.. can they tell me where i went wrong? please..?

1.Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form.
x + 2y - 2 = 3.
subtract 1x and add 2 to each side...
2y = -x + 5
so then.. divide each side by two..
y = -x/2 + 2 and 1/2

now.. i think i did everything right, but wheres the 'm' part? i'm completely lost on this one...

2.Find the slope and the y-intercept of the line.
2y + 5 = 0
subtract 5 from each side..
2y = -5
divide by 2...
y = -2 and 1/2
so, now i have -2 and 1/2=mx+b...now what?

yeah.. don't worry, only 12 more.. ><;

3. Write an equation of a line that is parallel to the line y=1/3x + 0
ok, got this one, i just need to make a parallel line on a graph, and find its slope-intercept form.. i got at least one! (i ran out of time on the test for this one)

4-7 i got right..
8-9 i ran out of time, but know how to do..

10. Under a specific medical plan, a patient has to pay $25 plus 20% of all expences. Write an equation that shows the cost of going to the emergency room. shot in the dark.. 25+1/5e=x where e=expences, and x=cost. 11-13 i either knew and ran out of time, or got right.. 14. Write an equation of the line whose x-int is -5 and slope is -1 that one i just need to get on a graph, and i can finish it, right? 15-20 i ran out of time on... also, on the bonus, i just didnt understand.. it said "Write an equation for a line that goes through (3,1) and is (insert upside-down T here) to y=-5x+3." what's that symbol? thanks in advance... 2. 1.Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form. x + 2y - 2 = 3. subtract 1x and add 2 to each side... 2y = -x + 5 so then.. divide each side by two.. y = -x/2 + 2 and 1/2 now.. i think i did everything right, but wheres the 'm' part? i'm completely lost on this one... Yeah, you did right. k is the number that is in front of x, which would be -0.5 or -1/2 in this case, and m is the other number. 2.Find the slope and the y-intercept of the line. 2y + 5 = 0 subtract 5 from each side.. 2y = -5 divide by 2... y = -2 and 1/2 so, now i have -2 and 1/2=mx+b...now what? -2,5 is the same as = 0x -2.5, right? So k is 0 this time. 3. Write an equation of a line that is parallel to the line y=1/3x + 0 ok, got this one, i just need to make a parallel line on a graph, and find its slope-intercept form.. i got at least one! (i ran out of time on the test for this one) k is the "slope" of the line, since the term with k in it is what changes when x changes, m is just a constant term that can tells how high the curve lays. So I believe that you know what you should concider to do at this moment... 10. Under a specific medical plan, a patient has to pay$25 plus 20% of all expences. Write an equation that shows the cost of going to the emergency room.

shot in the dark..
25+1/5e=x
where e=expences, and x=cost.
Great shot.

14. Write an equation of the line whose x-int is -5 and slope is -1
that one i just need to get on a graph, and i can finish it, right?
It probably means that it intersects the x-axis when x is -5. Then from there you should draw a figure (in your mind is always the best, but on paper will be fine as well) to figure out where it intersects the x-axis (hen you'll get the m value).

also, on the bonus, i just didnt understand.. it said "Write an equation for a line that goes through (3,1) and is (insert upside-down T here) to y=-5x+3." what's that symbol?
That means it's in a right angle to the other line. If you don't know why the slope of that curve becomes -1 ÷ the sope of the other curve, you should really find it out, even though your teacher has probably not told you and your class why...
