If you don't use a graphic calculator or a CAS, then you have to transform your function, so that you can use a normal calculator:

$\displaystyle - \log_2 (x+1)-3=\log_2 \left( \frac{1}{x+1} \right)-\log_2{8}$

$\displaystyle \log_2 \left( \frac{1}{x+1} \right)-\log_2{8}=\frac{\ln \left( \frac{1}{8(x+1)} \right) }{\ln(2)}$
