Functions:

Between 1993 and 2004, the number of first-year students enrolling in medical school can be modeled by f(x)=10.5x^2-125x+17186 where x=0 represents 1993. Based on the model answer the following:
a What year did the number of first-year enrollments reach a minimum?
b What is the domain of this function?
I am a little confused on what to do because it says x=0 represents 1993. I have no idea how to find what it is asking.

Any help is appreciated...

this is an upward opening parabola. its minimum value occurs at the vertex. so that is what you need to find.

there are two main ways to find this without using calculus. you can use the vertex formula, or complete the square. which have you learnt in class?

b What is the domain of this function?
this is a polynomial, its domain is all real x, as is the domain of all polynomials.

remember, the domain is the set of all input values (in this case, x-values) for which a function is defined

I think part be would be (0,11] for the domain...is this right?
Or is it just all real numbers?

yes, you are correct, since we are only considering those years, but that depends on if we include the years 1993 and 2004. if we include them, it would be [0,11]
