i need to describe the graph of y=x2-x. should i pick points? or should i know what it looks like just by the equation?

Zeros.
Asymptotes.
Discontinuities.
Intercepts.
Minima or Maxima.
Really, any interesting feature.

And, yes, just looking at some equations should give you a clue what to mention. In this case, it is a parabola through the Origin. This eliminates asymptotes and discontinuities. Now that we know it's a parabola, some more specific items can be included.

Vertex.
Directrix.
Axis of Symmetry.
"p" value.
Orientation.
