    Homework help with Polynomial and Rational Function

    (1) For the function
    h(x) = x3x2 – 17x -15,

    use long division to determine which of the following are factors of h(x)

    a) x + 5
    b) x + 1
    c) x + 3

    (2) Determine the oblique asymptote of the graph of the function.

    g(x) = x2 + 4x – 1 / x + 3

    Let's see if I get it right this time, seeing as I screwed this up a couple of days ago.

    g(x) = \frac{x^2 + 4x - 1}{x + 3}

    Do the division:
    g(x) = x + 1 - \frac{4}{x + 3}

    So when x goes to infinity, the last term goes to 0. Thus the asymptote is y = x + 1.

    I only know how to do it using the "code" box, and this is so fussy about putting the characters in place, I gave up on using it long ago.

    Yes, but it's a completely mess.

    Here's a simple example:

    \begin{array}{ccccccc}\ \ 3x^2&+\ 2x&-\ 8&\div&\left| \!{\underline {\,<br />
{x+2} \,}} \right.&=&3x-4\\<br />
-3x^2&-\ 6x&\\ \cline{0-1}<br />
&-\ 4x&-\ 8&\\<br />
&\ \ \ 4x&+\ 8&\\ \cline{2-3}<br />
\end{array}

    At least I'd perform this, with some of make-up.

    \overline{x+2}\,?

    Would it be that?

    Better yet, send me a PM 'cause we're wasting lots of posts here.
