center at (1,4); focus at (-2,4); vertex at (0,4) i know how to get h and k but i dont know how to get a^2 and b^2===> (x-1)^2 (y-4)^2 _______ - ______ ?

a is the distance from center to vertex. So a = 1, and a^{2} = 1. c is the distance from center to focus. So c = 3, and c^{2} = 9. Also rememver that b^{2} = c^{2} - a^{2}.
