    You have (a, 12) as a point on y = x^2 + x, so that means 12 = a^2 + a. Solving this gives

    a^2 + a - 12 = 0

    (a + 4)(a - 3) = 0

    a + 4 = 0 or a - 3 = 0

    a = -4 or a = 3.
