    Question Inequality checking?

my book lists enequality solving examples as simple substitution, such as

Decide whether 4 is a solution of the inequality.
    Problem:2x - 1 < 8
    Solution:2(4) - 1 < 8
    4 is a solution.

but in the actual work, problems are listed like this:
Check whether the given number is a solution of the inequality.
    Problem:n - 2 < 6; 3

is the number after the semicolon the given number, or is it another part altogether? thanks in advance

You are to put n = 3 into the inequality and see if it works.
