    Solve y = x + 1/x with 0 \< x \< 1 for x in terms of y.

    I need help with this assignment, Problem 3:

    Solve y = x + 1/x with 0 \< x \< 1 for x in terms of y.

    Any clues as to how to do this, would be greatly appreciated

    y = x + \frac{1}{x} ... note that x \ne 0.

    multiply every term by x ...

    xy = x^2 + 1

    0 = x^2 - xy + 1

    use the quadratic formula ...

    x = \frac{y \pm \sqrt{y^2 - 4}}{2}
