    Log problems

I'm also struggling with a log problem.

There's two parts. The first asks to solve for x:

I worked out that x^2-2x=e^2 or x(x-2)=e^2, but I can't isolate x further than that...

After that, I'm asked to find the inverse of this general function:

    (i.e. f^-1(y)= ?)

    Thank you...

On the first problem, you're correct so far. Don't you have a quadratic there? I mean, e^{2} is just a number, the same as 2.

As for the second problem, what is the normal method of inverting a function? What do you get when you try that?

    Again, thank you!

I got it after the quadratic tip (x=sqrt(e^2+1)+1 and then the same for the inverse but with y instead of 2)

Often all I need is a push in the right direction, but can't always find it... thank you for being generous to help on this site
