    Simplify Without Calculator

    Simplify the expressions below without using a calculator. Your answer should not have any radicals in it.

    (a) sqrt[u^4], where u = any real number.

    (b) sqrt[5x] * sqrt[80x^3], where x is greater than or equal to 0.

    (a) Remember that taking the square root is the same thing as raising to the 1/2 power:
    \sqrt{a} = a^{1/2}

    (b) Use the product of radicals property to start:
    \sqrt{a} \cdot \sqrt{b} = \sqrt{ab}
