# Math Help - square roots

1. ## square roots

i don't get how the teacher got ====> x^2-14x+24

from =======> 4x+1=x^2-10+25

the question is

5- square root 4x+1 = x

so i first square everything and move the 5 over
making it -5

i then square the x, and i got 25 (bc 25 square is 5) and i double up the middle making it -10
so this is what i got also

4x+1=x^2-10+25

but i don't know how he went from =====> 4x+1=x^2-10+25
to=====> x^2-14x+24

Thanks

$5 - \sqrt{4x+1} = x$

$- \sqrt{4x+1} = x-5$ Squaring both sides gives

$4x + 1 = x^2 - 10x + 25$ not $4x + 1 = x^2 - 10 + 25$

From here you should get $x^2 - 14x + 24 = 0$
