Just started college an im already stuck..

So I started this class on Hydraulics an this math is getten to me... no clue how to do it and would very much appreciate some help... F = PxA, P = F\A, A = F\P.... so here we go.. If a force of 1,000 lb (4,500N) is applied over an area of 20 in2 (129.03 cm2), what is the pressure? Would greatly appreciate any help ^_^

Pressure = Force/Area. So you have P= 1000 lb/(20 in^2) = 50 pounds/in^2 = 50 psi.

Or in metric units: P = 4500N/129.03 cm^2 = 34.9 N/cm^2. The common unit for pressure in metric units is pascals, which is equivalent to newtons per square meter, so do the conversion like this:

$\displaystyle 34.9 \frac N {cm^2} \times ( \frac {100 cm} {m})^2 = 3.49 \times 10^5 \frac N {m^2} = 3.49 \times 10^5 \ Pa$.
