Hello all, i'm a new user on this website and I would like to greet you all.

I'm currently struggling with math, i'm trying to finish my G.E.D i've completed all the other subjects but have been stuck on math for three years.

If i don't pass my math by December 6th, 2013 then I will need to retake all five test over again.

I've failed my math test three times, and currently have another test appointment for November 26th this month.

Right now my teacher gave us a homework packet.
It's called Proportion in Area and Volume.
Here is a couple problems I have a hard time solving.

Problem 7)
The side of one cube is 2in., and the side of a second cube is 4in. The volume of the second cube is how many times that of the first?

The answer is 8 times.

I can't figure out how they got that.

This is the way I've been trying.

2*2 = 4.
4*4 = 16

16 / 4 = 4
I must be doing the formula wrong, is there a certain formula to follow? The instructions on the pack at pretty confusing or I'm not comprehending them.

Says the proportion using the area formula is A = s * s, or s^2

Thats what i'm doing.
2 * 2 = 4 which 2 is the side right?
or would i need to do 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 = 8
then
4 * 4 * 4 * 4 =16

then 16 / 8 = 2. How do they get an answer of 8?
Since they mention this "The volume of the second cube is how many times that of the first?"
Do i just assume its 8? Since half of 16 is 8? Or is there a secret formula which straight up gives you this "8" for a answer?
